Cleaning a silk scarf:
Share
A silk scarf is a delicate accessory, so gentle cleaning is important to preserve the fibers and colors. Here are our cleaning recommendations:
Gentle hand washing (recommended)
- Use lukewarm water (max. 30°C).
- Use a mild detergent, ideally a special silk detergent or a gentle baby shampoo.
- Soak the scarf briefly (3-5 minutes), do not rub or wring.
- Move gently through the water – do not scrub.
- Rinse with clean water, possibly with a dash of vinegar (this preserves the shine).
- Squeeze out the excess water between two towels, do not wring!
- Dry lying down, away from direct sunlight or heating.
Machine wash (only if absolutely necessary)
- Only use the gentle wash cycle (silk or hand wash program).
- Use a laundry bag.
- Cold wash (max. 30°C) with silk detergent.
- No spin cycle, at most on the lowest setting.
Important instructions:
- Do not use bleach or fabric softener.
- Do not put in the dryer.
- To smooth: Iron inside out, preferably while still slightly damp and at a low temperature (silk setting).
Smoothing without an iron
Lightly moistening is often enough to remove wrinkles and creases.
- After dampening the silk scarf, lay it flat and do not let it air dry in direct sunlight – the silk will smooth itself out. This is the best way to protect the delicate fibers.
If ironing is still necessary:
- Turn the scarf inside out (i.e., to the matte back, not the shiny front).
- Place a thin cloth over the silk to protect it from the hot iron.
- Iron it while slightly damp at the lowest temperature (silk setting).
