Each scarf series tells its own story. This story explores the vitality of water and translates it into forms and structures. Inspired by the vast Kalahari in southern Africa, it incorporates the forms and structures of the river and lake of Lucerne in central Switzerland.
Following the principle: Where there is water, there is life. In the Bantu language Xhosa, "Ubomi" means life and became the name of this series. The series consists of five elemental motifs: Amanzi (water), Amatye (stones), Ingca (grass), Isanti (sand), and Umhlaba (earth).
The Ubomi series was designed by textile designer Flavia Bienz . With her graphic designs, Flavia connects the two worlds in which BADI Culture operates: South Africa and Switzerland. Using wax crayons, charcoal, and watercolours. Flavia harmoniously blends coarse textures and vibrant structures. Inspired by the currents of the Reuss River and the tranquil waters of Lake Lucerne, Flavia draws forms and surfaces that reflect the movement of the water and the topography.
