Cleaning & Care of Silk
Moisten to remove wrinkles and creases.
Lightly dampening the silk scarf removes wrinkles, as the silk smooths itself out as it dries. However, care must be taken not to damage the delicate fibres.
Here are some tips:
1. Lightly moisten :
- Use a spray bottle filled with clean water to gently dampen the scarf. Spray from a distance of about 20–30 cm so that the scarf is only slightly damp, but not wet.
- Alternatively, you can wrap the scarf in a damp towel to moisten it evenly.
2. Let it dry :
- Hang the scarf on a clothes hanger or lay it flat on a towel to air dry.
- Carefully pull it into shape so that it dries evenly and flattens out.
Why does drying help with smoothing?
- Silk naturally relaxes as it dries. If the creases are not too deep, they will smooth out on their own.
- For stubborn creases, light ironing may be necessary after drying. See ironing instructions.
Important instructions:
- Never use hot water or excessive moisture, as this can weaken the silk fibres or leave water stains.
- Never dry the scarf directly in the sun or on a heater, as this can damage the colour and structure of the silk.
Ironing instructions:
- Clean the scarf : Make sure the scarf is clean and dry. Stains could become permanently burned in by the heat.
- Iron settings : Set the iron to the lowest setting (often marked "silk" or "low"). Turn off the steam function, as water stains can damage delicate silk.
- Use a protective layer : Lay the scarf flat on the ironing board. Place a thin cotton cloth or a special ironing cloth over it. This prevents direct contact between the iron and the silk.
- Ironing : Iron over the scarf with gentle pressure. Avoid leaving the iron in one spot for too long to prevent heat damage. If creases are particularly stubborn, you can lightly dampen the scarf, but the scarf itself should not get wet.
- Storage : Hang the scarf up after ironing so that it smooths out completely and no new creases form.
Tips:
- If you are unsure, first test on a small, inconspicuous part of the scarf.
- Iron the scarf from the reverse side if you don't want to use a cloth to avoid shiny spots.
- A handheld steamer can be a gentler alternative for removing wrinkles.
