Each scarf tells its own story. This story originates in Lucerne, which carries with it a touch of Africa. At its heart lies the dynamism and aesthetics of water – the elemental imagery is reminiscent of African patterns and murals. Through her graphic designs, textile designer Flavia Bienz connects the two worlds in which BADI Culture constantly operates.
Method:
Using wax pastels, charcoal, and watercolours, she harmoniously blends coarse textures and vibrant structures. Inspired by the flow of the Reuss River and the tranquil waters of Lake Lucerne, Flavia Bienz creates forms and surfaces that reflect the movements of the water and the topography.
5 Series:
This project resulted in a series of five graphic patterns:
- Amanzi - the water (blue)
- Umhlaba - the Earth (orange)
- Ingca - the grass (green)
- Isanti - the sand (yellow)
- Amatye - the stones (black)
Each of the designs have a Xhosa name. Xhosa is one of the widespread indigenous Bantu languages in South Africa and is among those with the most click consonants.
